Hormone Balancing Pumpkin Pie Shake & Sugar Cravings
Hello Lovely!
I am seriously IN love with the holiday season. It is my favorite time of the year. Warm sweaters, tea, memories with the best of family and friends….and of course PIE. But what I don’t like is sugar cravings, bloating, and feeling irritable/crabby from all the food.
During the holidays, I try to focus on balance and I like to enjoy crave-worthy healthier versions of my favorite seasonal foods. And one of the foods is PIE, especially pumpkin pie! Recently, I discovered this delicious shake recipe that not only tastes like pie, but it helps me keep my hormones balanced. I am excited to share this recipe with you along with 4 other tips to bust sugar cravings.
Now, I am not saying that you need to ban all the pumpkin pie during the Holidays because there is nothing wrong with enjoying desserts. {Especially because the best part of fall is well PIE.}
But if you can relate to me and deal with sugar addiction, once you start eating sweets it can be difficult to stop and it can make you feel out of control. For you, it may be the best option to save sweets for only special occasions to avoid overdoing the desserts and feeling sick. And for those of you who are dealing with major hormone imbalances, avoiding sugary desserts may be the best choice altogether especially when you are unsure of the setbacks that make occur on your own healing journey. Of course the choice is up to YOU in every moment. But I encourage you to make a plan now so in the moment you know where you stand. ?
For me, I have come to a point on my journey where I eat desserts when I want to, but I try to be respectful of my body and not over do it. But I’ll be the first to admit that “not overdoing it” is extremely difficult for me. I eat one piece of pie and I want another, and soon i will have ate the entire pie. I have accepted that this isn’t something that I can necessarily change about myself, but instead choose to avoid desserts so I don’t spiral down.
I believe the most important thing when it comes to indulging is to stay feeling empowered. Thoughts like..well i have to eat this pie because everyone else is…isn’t empowering. How many times do you eat dessert only because everyone else is? Sometimes you need to stick up for yourself and what you choose to put in your body. You are the one that lives in it!
Maybe you decide to eat just one dessert at your annual Christmas party. But in the moment you decide to eat a 2nd, 3rd, 4th dessert and before you know it you ate 10+ desserts!! Now you feel awful and guilty about the binge….That isn’t empowering either.
Choose to Be Empowered.
What IS empowering is to listen to your body and do what feels good to you whether that is indulge in a small piece of pie or choose to avoid them all together. To always TRUST yourself to eat whatever you want because you know that your next meal will be exactly what your body craves. Choose to be okay with the fact that you might sometimes eat a little too much… Choose to be OK that right now on your healing journey eating sugar ISN’T a good idea even if you REALLY want it for one day. #truth Sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do, to get the results we want.
One of my best tips to enjoy life is to make healthy alternatives to the real thing! I like feeling my best as often as possible and I really don’t like putting myself into situations where I feel out of control aka. all the desserts calling my name. Since I LOVE pie, this was the perfect breakfast/dinner/anytime of the day meal!

You may want to still enjoy some real pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving and I want to share a few things that you can do to avoid the sugar hangover if you decide to do so!
- Enjoy a smaller piece and grab more sweet potatoes. – Sweet potatoes and squash can easily be made into an almost-dessert-like dish when you add cinnamon, butter, and coconut milk. If you don’t eat a lot of sugar, this can be VERY sweet and a great option to satisfy your sweet tastes buds and STILL feel great! I just ate some right now and it was the perfect way to end my meal! You can always grab a small piece of pie and finish up those delicious nourishing squash if you are still hungry!
- Drink lots of tea. – I love tea because it is so soothing on my body and it hydrates me and helps flush out the sugar. Everyone wants a warm drink on the holidays and tea is a great option! Matcha green tea is packed full of antioxidants and it will give you a boost of energy while everyone else is wanting to take naps! I don’t know about your, but its hard for me to socialize and be pleasant when I am just so tired from the massive food baby!
- Offer to Make/Bring a Paleo/Vegan version of the dessert. – I love paleo/vegan desserts because you can enjoy them and avoid a lot of the inflammatory qualities in grains/dairy. Both of these ingredients are not good for the hormones so avoiding them is key to feeling good! Of course there is still sugar in these desserts so don’t expect to over indulge on them just because they are paleo! But I always find comfort in knowing that I am at least having REAL food ingredients in my dessert. It honestly breaks my heart when I read the ingredients in baked goods especially all the nasty oils and the list is a MILE LONG!! (what is half of that stuff???)
Even if you take just a simple step towards upgrading ONE ingredient in your homemade baked goods, I KNOW it will make a difference in your health and how you feel. ❤️ - Stock up on Fish Oil. – Sugar is inflammatory and I notice a huge difference in my body and skin when I eat even just a little. My skin turns reddish and my immune system lowers, I might sneeze more,etc. To make sure that my body stays glowing, I like to add in extra fish oil. This keeps my skin glowing, my eyes clear, and my allergies at bay. Why does this help? Fish oil is anti-inflammatory. It helps to calm down the inflammation and balance out the inflammation. USANA’s BioMega is my favorite fish oil which is double distilled and tested thoroughly so I know the oils are not damaged and oxidized! (This is a big problem with fish oil so please only buy a high quality one!) And since the supplements are strictly tested, I trust that there is also no mercury found in these supplements.
