If these sounds like you…keep on reading.
You might have heard the term low-glycemic diet and glazed your eyes over. This diet isn’t really on the trend list. (even though the idea is the same as some of the trends like paleo) But it is so eye-opening to understand so you can stop feeling like a crazy person and instead become the glowing entrepreneur you were meant to be. 🙂
Low-glycemic – what does it mean? And how can it help you feel more awesome? (and ditch the crazy)
The glycemic index is a scale that measures how food impacts our blood sugar level. Foods range between low-glycemic to high glycemic. If the food is low-glycemic it has minimal impact in terms of raising our blood sugar. If the food is high glycemic it has a high impact on our blood sugar.
When we eat foods that spike our blood sugar, our insulin levels increase to bring our blood sugar back down. It is not safe for our blood sugar to be too high, and our body is always working hard to obtain homeostasis. Homeostasis is the safe place for our body to be in. I think this is so beautiful that our body is constantly working to protect us. No matter what is going on in our life and in our body – our body’s number one job is to keep us alive and well.
In order to bring our blood sugar back down, our body produces a hormone called insulin. Insulin is our fat storage hormone. When insulin is released it quickly says to the body to take all the extra sugar (glucose) and store it – so the body can go back to homeostasis. When all the normal stores of sugar are full – our body stores it as body fat. Not only are you storing fat, but the entire process of your blood sugar going up and then down is a lot of stress on the body – leaving you feeling exhausted having little energy left. When you are down with little energy, you are more likely to grab something sweet. And if you are eating another cookie or another high glycemic snack – that will start you right back on the roller coaster. After eating this way for long periods of time – it leaves our body so exhausted, out of whack, and hormonally imbalanced. (which causes a lot of problems too)
Once you understand this concept, it is SO clear to see how amazing the human body is. Our body loves us so we should love it back by learning how it works and then putting it into action. <3 Our diets for the last 15-20 years have been pushing low-calorie diets with no nutrition in the foods. Our way of eating over the last 15-20 years have been pushing low-calorie diets with no nutrition in the foods. We have been eating low-calorie cereals doused in milk and sugar which are high glycemic because we took out all the fat content. We have been taught to FEAR fat. (honestly sometimes I still fear it even though I know better) Our body CRAVES fat and it is such a good source of energy. Fat is what feeds our brain and our gut. Both of these areas are the powerhouses of our body! If you want high-level energy and performance, stop fearing fat!
High glycemic foods include white bread, white pasta, chips, tortillas, etc. When you look at back label – it might have very little fat and protein. Immediately, this is a sign that eating this alone will spike your blood sugar. If you are going to consume high-glycemic foods, (for fun) it is best to pair with fats/proteins. Overall, it is best to stick with high-quality grains like brown rice, quinoa, millet, etc. These grains are nutrient dense and a much better option than ANY processed foods.
Personally, I vote to eat the most nutrient dense food as possible at ALL meals. As not only do you keep your blood sugars stable, but you are able to get as much nutrition into your diet. I avoid as many processed foods as possible and if I do eat processed foods I always aim to make the best choices possible.
When it comes to eating REAL food like fruits and vegetables, these are all listed as a low-glycemic to medium glycemic foods. So if you want to keep your diet as simple as possible, stick with real food and you are safe! And the more processed you go…the more likely it is a high-glycemic food. And watch out for foods that are considered “healthy”. Make sure to look at the ingredients and always select products that have at least some fat and protein. 😉 (stop fearing fat ! )
