How I Intuitively Heal My Skin to Glow – Part 3

Heyyoo! {This is part THREE of the 3 part series!}  The first week I talked all about how nutrition affects my skin and last week I talked all about how lifestyle choices affect my skin. These 2 pieces are cornerstones of glowing skin and an overall resilient and healthy body.
But there is ONE more piece that I want to share with you and that is our emotional and mental health. This might be the most important of them all and definitely the most powerful.
Our thoughts bring up emotions and emotions affect how we feel. Just think of that. When we think happy and confident thoughts, we feel good and get lots done! We serve better at work, to our families, and even our friends!  But when we think doubtful and fearful thoughts, we feel sad, lonely, and anxious. We don’t get as much work done and we might even partake in bad habits like overeating or overspending, etc.

Some days life isn’t going to be perfect and you might have a bad body image day or your skin is a mess.  When my skin was really bad, I would just want to hide. I would be afraid to look in the mirror because I didn’t want to know what I really looked liked.  I wouldn’t feel confident and I never wanted to step out of my comfort zone or even socialize with people all that much. My thoughts were leading me to shrink back and not be seen.  My thoughts lead me to take desperate action to heal my skin as fast as possible.  My thoughts ultimately affected the actions that I took on a daily basis.  It was an emotional rollercoaster based on how my skin looked that day. (and it wasn’t a fun one to be on)
I was stuck on the roller coaster.  And I just wanted to desperately get off. But the truth is…I could get off at anytime I wanted…clear skin or not. It was up to me to choose my own thoughts outside of my own perception of how I looked.
Our thoughts have the power to change our life, but it is up to us to shift them. It is our responsibility to change the thoughts and beliefs that lie within us. No one else can do that. No one else can change our response to a situation but us.  And our negative emotions are one of the biggest forms of stress on your  body!  So just knowing you have the power to shift from negative to positive thoughts is a game-changer!
Struggling with acne was just the icing on the cake of my already low self-confidence…I felt doomed to having an awful life because I couldn’t even look people in the eye. I had zero confidence.  I am sure you might be able to relate as we all struggle with self-confidence….BUT nonetheless, something inside of me told me these thoughts were a lie. That my perception of myself wasn’t true. One day when I was about 11 years old, I clearly remembering looking at myself in the mirror and even though I had no tools to help me feel confident, I told myself that I was beautiful.  I stared straight into my eyes and told myself that I was beautiful and I KNEW that I had this power inside of me even though it was not reflected on the outside. Afterwards, I felt tingling, happy, and powerful all over my body and my entire energy shifted. I had never felt so strong and powerful. Life went on of course and I fought negative thoughts regularly just like anyone else, but every day I KNEW it was up to me to believe that I was beautiful and it was up to me to find confidence within.
My point in sharing this story is that there are days when everything seems to be going wrong {even if you think you are doing every “perfect”}.
Our thoughts and emotions can take us on a wild rollercoaster.  There was a time in my life when I wanted to look perfect on the outside. All my focus and attention went to one thing. My skin and my body. I was riding the wild rollercoaster where my happiness depended on how I thought I looked that day.  I pushed people away and stop enjoying life because I was focused on only one thing.
Being healthy, energized, and feeling great is one thing.  But truthfully, it is our thoughts that keep us in a place of balance and accepting where we are on the journey.
Moving out of perfectionism mindset and embracing a lifestyle of letting go was the most freedom I ever felt. Ultimately, it took changing the thoughts that I believed about myself that took me off the roller coaster.
How do you get off this roller coaster of emotions and instead find peace, calm and love for yourself and your body?
Here are my 3 personal favorite action steps to take me from anxious and fearful to calm and madly in love with myself. <3
1. Journal – I have always had a journal since I was young. I used to feel embarrassed about having one as it seems so typical girly (lol), but now I realize how it really helped carry me through and process my emotions through difficult times in my life.  Whenever you feel a negative emotion, it is important to feel it and let it go.  Journaling is one way of releasing these emotions.  Journaling is simply an expression of your thoughts and it helps you to clear them and make sense of the jumble in your brain.  It feels cathartic to get things out on paper.  If you have never tried it, I highly recommend it. If you don’t know where to start just start! (you cannot do it wrong!) For exercises and extra support, I recommend reading Katie Dalebout’s book “Let it Out” A Journey through Journaling. I will be doing a book review on this shortly so stay tuned to learn more!
2. Singing – I loved singing as a little girl. I would sing all the time. Singing is a beautiful way to express emotions and release your feelings. I am not even the best singer, but the emotions that we feel from music and singing is what connects us to music. Music raises our vibration and allows us to connect with our emotions in a different way. Find your favorite song(s) and start singing as loud as you want! I promise you will feel amazing after.
3. Pray/Meditate – I spent a lot of times in prayer during all the ups and downs of my life.  But now I have added meditation which is really a time where I can quiet my mind and listen to God’s voice and wisdom.  So instead of spending all my time doing all the talking, I sit in stillness and listen to the quiet.  This always helps me to feel stronger and more resilient.  I have come to trust whatever enters my mind or feelings as what God wants me to know.  I think so often we question or ask “Am I just making this up?”  When in reality, we need to trust ourselves more and believe that the right answers will always be right there. This is so key for me when my emotions are running all over the place and my brain is completely run down with information and emotions.
All of 3 of these ideas are great ways to help you clear your emotions and help you step into a positive, happy, and stronger version of you!  This is what helps me stay sane, focused, and balanced emotionally so I can take daily action closer to my dreams and goals. <3
